The Bahá'í Religious Education Agency
Does your local SACRE have a Bahá'í Member?
About the Bahá'í Faith SACRE SACREs (Standing Advisory Councils on Religious Education) are responsible in law for advising local education authorities on RE and collective worship. There are over one hundred SACREs in England and Wales. Each SACRE is composed of four representative groups (or three in Wales): Christian and other religious denominations (including the Bahá'í Faith), the Church of England (except in Wales), teachers' associations and elected councillors.

There would normally only be one Bahá'í representative for each local authority area so you may need to consult with surrounding Bahá'í communities as to how to choose the representative.

While it is obviously beneficial for the representative to take an active part in meetings, just attending contributes to raising the profile of the Bahá'í Faith in your area.
A Bahá’í and two other faith members of Monmouthshire County Council SACRE made a visit to Monmouth Comprehensive School to observe an act of corporate worship and the teaching of Religious Education. The visit was filmed by MONTV, a local community internet TV channel. The Faith members each attended four RE classes and observed lessons on Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. Afterwards they were interviewed about their role on SACRE.

SACRE - are you a member?
One member's experience of getting a place on their local SACRE
Several years ago following several applications by our LSA for membership, an invitation was received to give a talk to our local SACRE, with a view to membership.  Peter Hulme gave the talk, SACRE requested the LSA to provide a member, and the rest is history.

Membership of SACRE has resulted in several useful contacts:

1. Asked to help re-write agreed syllabus at the next 5 yearly review, leading to opportunity to create Baha'i scheme of work to dovetail into syllabus.  Once this was incorporated, the Schools Library Service was happy to accept a Baha'i Resource Box to lend out to schools.

2. Contact with national magazine 'RE today' through editor Joyce Mackley (also SACRE member) who asked for 2 Baha'i articles.

3. With other SACRE members (one Jewish, one Muslim)  helped to form the Herefordshire Multi-faith Development Group, which has so far run several successful multi-faith days involving at least 500 Herefordshire school pupils. These activities have also brought contact with more members of non-Christian faiths.

4. A spin-off has been invitations from individual schools asking me to run Baha'i workshops. (Midge Ault)
